Irish Franchising Owner Wins Again
Leading greeting card publisher and franchisor, Card Connection, has named Irish franchisee, Gabriel McGeown, as the winner of its ‘Franchisee of the Year’ award for the second year running at its annual company conference, held this year in Cheltenham. Gabriel McGeown who joined Card Connection 4 years ago originally managed Armagh, South Tyrone and part of County Down but has recently expanded his franchise territory to include County Antrim, Belfast and the North Down region of Ireland.

“Gabriel McGeown is an outstanding performer,” explains Michael Johnson, Managing Director, Card Connection. “His ‘can do’ attitude ensures he approaches every opportunity positively. He has recently taken on an additional franchise territory and is already transforming the area. “Gabriel is also a true team player and is always happy to help and share his successful experiences with other franchisees,” continues Johnson. “He has also come up with some innovative ideas to capture new business, such as equipping a one of his vehicles with a fully merchandised greeting card display to show potential retail accounts the full theatre and quality of the products. This has been hugely successful for generating new business in his region.” Other franchisees recognised for their achievements at the conference included North East & Midlands regional winners Andy and Vicki Thompson, franchisees for Sunderland and Durham. “Andy and Vicki have been particularly proactive and have opened 47 new retail accounts in the past year,” confirms Johnson. “We were also impressed with their clever and ultra, efficient idea for pre-loading mobile displays so merchandising of greeting cards in some stores can be completed in less than five minutes.”

Atul Patel, franchisee for South West and South East London, won the regional award for South East, London & Anglia for impressive business growth, with sales up 16% compared with last year. David & Marie Clements from Cornwall also won a regional award. “The couple are an inspiration to our more rurally based franchisees, with sales up 12% in the past year,” explains Johnson. Catherine Bartle, franchisee for Newport won the Heidi Sulley trophy for Team Spirit and Tenacity. “Catherine has showed tremendous application to build her business and has increased distribution across all Card Connection’s product categories,” explains Johnson. “She has demonstrated great teamwork with her colleague Diane and always looks at implementing Card Connection’s initiatives with her full enthusiasm.”

Card Connection is part of UK Greetings, which is a subsidiary of the largest publicly owned greeting card publisher in the world and has limited vacancies for franchisees who are keen to run an expanding business. Suitable candidates would ideally have some management experience as, once established, and depending on the size of the territory, they could be expected to employ a small team, operate a small warehouse and have several liveried vans on the road. Since the franchise network in the UK is complete, the available opportunities now consist of acquiring an already-established territory from an existing franchisee.

Zip Yard Franchise now seven years young
The Zip Yard was founded seven years ago after extensive market research identified a gap in the market where it found how very few body shapes conform to the 'standard' European sizes found on the High Street. We also realised that people no longer had the time or skills to tackle even the simplest of hems let alone risking damage to a favourite or expensive garment.

Originating in Ireland The Zip Yard grew into a franchise with shops all over the country and has entered the British market place two years ago. The success of The Zip Yard has relied on taking a different approach to the clothing alterations business. People want their garments, whether they are 'every day' items or 'special occasion' wear altered by trained professionals they can trust, quickly and efficiently, in clean modern premises. This has led to our branches enjoying a high volume of repeat business on a weekly basis.

The Zip Yard prides itself in highly visible and bold branding. This deliberately strong branding separates us from our competitors and helps us to dominate in the high street. We believe in our product and we feel that we are well on our way to making The Zip Yard brand one of the most recognisable around. As well as our unique branding, all our outlets are finished to the highest of standards and include 'state of the art' machinery, computer system and in most cases our seamstresses work in full view of the public so customers can see for themselves the high standards of workmanship.

Pizza Hut Franchise seek injunction
The holders of the master franchise for Pizza Hut's delivery services through Ireland have secured a High Court injunction at preventing Pizza Hut's US-based parent terminating that agreement. Q Co Franchising Ireland Ltd, owned and operated by brothers John and Patrick Cronin, secured orders from Mr Justice Michael Hanna including an injunction compelling Pizza Hut International LLC, with an address in Texas, not to terminate franchise agreements purportedly terminated earlier this month pending the full hearing of their dispute.Q Co, which has more than 35 Pizza Hut delivery franchises north and south claims the parent company is not entitled to terminate the master agreement.

Pizza Hut International LLC has argued that Q Co owes them €1m had urged the court not to grant the injunctions. In his ruling, Mr Justice Hanna said he was prepared to grant the injunction, pending the hearing of the dispute, on grounds including that Q Co had made out that there was a fair issue to be tried. The Judge said that at the centre of this dispute was a claim by Q Co that Pizza Hut would not seek royalty payments from his clients for a period of 12 months from December and November, and have waived the arrears that had accrued.

The parent company, he noted, had very much disputed this claim. From the correspondence and submissions in the case the Judge said this issue could only be resolved at a full hearing of the action. The Judge also stated the balance of convenience favoured granting the injunctions. Q Co had claimed it would go out of business if the injunctions were not made, with the loss of 11 jobs, the Judge noted. Business, the Judge added, was not like a marriage, where the courts could not force a couple in dispute "to cohabit".

The courts he added could however coax business partners into some commercial arrangement until matters had been finally resolved. The Judge also said any loss suffered claimed by the parent company as a result of the injunctions being granted could be remedied if the case obtained an early hearing date. In its proceedings Q Co is injunctions preventing Pizza Hut representing to franchisees of Q Co that the master franchise agreements have been terminated or granting those agreements to any other person of company. However Pizza Hut, who have denied any wrong doing claims Q Co has breached the agreement on grounds including it has failed to make royalty payments to the parent company, failed to make payments due to Revenue and failed to ensure franchisees are complying strictly with the terms and conditions of their franchise agreements. It is also claimed Q Co maintained false records and submitted false reports to the parent company. Q Co denies the claims

First Coffee Franchise in the Republic of Ireland for Cafe2U. The world's leading mobile café franchise prepares to expand its operations in Ireland. David Hobbs will operate as the first Cafe2U franchisee in the Republic of Ireland.

Visiting business parks and Industrial Estates in the South Dublin and Wicklow area, David will serve Cafe2U's unique blend of gourmet espresso coffee, hot food and snacks to delighted customers at these non-traditional locations. He subsequently flew to Leeds to discuss the opportunities available in the South of Ireland and see the franchise in action at Cafe2U's head office. The expansion into the Republic of Ireland is a great success for Cafe2U who already operate over 45 franchises across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. Cafe2U wish David every success with his new Cafe2U franchise and hope to add further franchises across the Republic of Ireland in the coming year.

About the Cafe2U Mobile Cafe Franchise:

Cafe2U is proud to be the pioneer of the mobile cafe industry. Cafe2U launched its first prototype mobile cafe van in the year 2000 on Sydney's northern beaches. It was with this first vehicle that the mobile cafe franchise concept and potential profitability of this new style of business model were tested. Back in 2004 Cafe2U was purchased by its current owners, and a strategy was implemented to fully franchise the business. A General Manager was appointed to manage this process. This process involved restructuring and repositioning the business for longevity, making it suitable for the UK and N European market.

This process included the design and feel of the brand itself, the development of the culture and the core values of the brand, defining the key products offered within the model, the development of the franchise documentation, operational manuals and territory modelling systems, as well as Franchise Partner training modules and system food safe accreditations. In 2005 the mobile cafe franchise model was complete and Cafe2U was relaunched in the Australian market. At that time Cafe2U had 12 Franchise Partners, all of which were Sydney based.

During 2005 Cafe2U commenced a proof of concept in Leeds, England with a view to expand the brand internationally. In 2006 the UK Cafe2U team recruited a dedicated Franchise Development Manager to train and support mobile cafe franchises in their businesses. Recruitment of a dedicated Marketing Manager to assist in the continued development of the brand and an Events Coordinator occurred late in 2007. By the end of 2006 the Cafe2U Franchise Partner family had grown to 50 in Australia and 6 in the UK. In December 2006 Cafe2U was rated as one of Australia's top 7 franchise systems by the Financial Review 'Smart Investor' based purely upon Franchise Partner return on investment. This was a result of an independent rating of over 600 Australian franchise systems.

In 2007 Cafe2U UK appointed an Operations manager and doubled the FDM personnel to cater for the increase in new franchise launches in the UK. In January 2009 Cafe2U was listed in the Business Review Weekly (BRW) Fastest 100 franchise systems, as well as being featured, for the second time, on BBC2's Working Lunch business program. In July 2009 Cafe2U launched its proof of concept into California, USA, 21 outlets in the UK and the first in Ireland. In November 2009, Cafe2U was awarded best in class award by the UK Beverage Service Association, for the third consecutive year.

In December 2009, and 2010, Cafe2U was awarded the 'Best Value Franchise System' by AFR's Smart Investor Magazine, out of more than 1000 contendors. Golden Bean Medal winner - for our exclusive Cafe2U coffee blend. During 2010, and 2011 Cafe2U continued to expand its brand, as well make improvements to the operatoinal aspects of the business model to improve profits for franchise partners and operating guidelines. September 2010 - David Downie joined Cafe2U UK as Non-Exec Chairman, bringing board level experience from companies like ASDA, Phones4U, and HSS Hire.

September 2011 - Cafe2U again topped the polls in the BSA awards, with 7 franchisees gaining recognition, and Laura (Cafe2u Aberdeen) being commended for her outstanding service at the BSA awards ceremony in London. October 2011 - Cafe2U appointed Will Vernon as its new Operations Director. There are currently over 150 Franchise Partners operating across UK, Ireland, Australia and the USA.
